Abstract
This paper analyzes the impact and importance of electronic access to public libraries. Electronic access to public libraries has been recognized as one of the basic services an eGovernment system needs to implement. The current level of this service in EU countries, as well as in some non-EU countries is given. In addition, the project of European Digital Library is discussed. European Digital Library is envisioned as central access point (portal) for all European countries national libraries. The main goal of this library is to promote the richness and diversity of European cultural heritage and to provide
easy access to all users.
