Abstract

Particle systems are primary tool for computer visualisation of certain fuzzy phenomena. This paper presents history, features, elements and practical applications of particle systems. An analysis is also given based on several master’s theses in computer graphics field in which particle systems were used. They are analysed in the framework of 4 elements which are important for visualisation of particle systems. Those elements are: emitter, physical forces acting on the system, lifetime of particles and their visual appearance. Results show that a high level of visual realism is achievable through the usage of particle systems. Given their worldwide popularity, knowledge of particle systems through the course of higher education in area of computer visualisation is desirable, very useful and much needed.
